Thomas, 1915

Greater Flat-headed bat

External characters (Table 89)
This description is based on specimens from Myanmar. The forearm length averages 27.5 mm (26.6-28.1 mm). Externally, it is essentially similar to Tylonycteris pachypus from Darjeeling District although the pelage averages a little darker in the mid-dorsal region. The throat and belly are paler than the back, a dull grey/brown. The ears are triangular, with broadly rounded tips (Tro2). The membranes are dark brown throughout (Tro1). The soles of the feet and the base of the first digits (thumbs) have broad fleshy circular pads (Fig. 196). The baculum is minute with a broad base and a simple tip (Fig. 192).

Cranial characters
The condylo-canine length averages 11.3 mm (11.1-11.7 mm) and slightly exceeds that of T. pachypus . The general morphology of the skull is essentially similar to that of T. pachypus (Fig. 191) except that the braincase and rostrum are distinctly broader; the supraorbital processes are better developed and the nasal notch is considerably larger, extending posteriorly to the level of the infraorbital foramina (Fig. 197).

Dentition
Upper toothrow length (C-M3) averages 4.0 mm (3.9-4.1 mm). The morphology of the teeth is essentially similar to that of T. pachypus (Fig. 193).

Variation
The specimen from Mizoram, India is provisionally referred to the nominate subspecies T. r. robustula .
