Vespertilio is comparable to Eptesicus (Ese1), but with the ears much shorter and broader. In the skull (Fig. 183), the rostrum is flattened above, with a deep concavity on each side between the nares and lachrymal region. The nares are very large; they extend back nearly half way to the interorbital constriction. The width of the palatal emargination exceeds its length.

The genus includes 2 species with a geographical range that includes Scandinavia; Europe; Afghanistan to China; Korea; Japan and Taiwan (Koopman, 1993). One species is present in the Indian Subcontinent:
