Genus Scotomanes

Dobson, 1875

Harlequin bats

The external and cranial characters are essentially similar to those of Eptesicus , although the fur has a distinct colour pattern of white on a variegated brown/orange background . The skull is relatively broader and the anterior palatal emargination narrow. The lachrymal region is expanded with the anterior edge of the orbit distinctly beaded and angular. The teeth are characterised by the reduction of the posterior portion of the last molar both above and below. In M3, both the mesostyle and metacone are absent, although the position of each is indicated. m3 has the talonid considerably smaller than the trigonid (Fig. 165).

Dental formula:   i - 2 -   c 1   pm - - - 4   m 1 2 3 = 30.
                          1 2 3     1        - 2 - 4       1 2 3

The genus includes one species (Corbet and Hill, 1992), although ornatus and emarginatus are provisionally listed as being specifically distinct in Koopman, 1993. It has a geographical range that includes India to southern China and Vietnam: Scotomanes ornatus
