This description is based on Khajuria, 1970; Khajuria, 1980. Named as a race of H. cineraceus , it was promoted to specific status by Topal, 1975; p.31 on the basis of its distinctive bacular morphology which clearly distinguishes it both from H. ater and H. cineraceus (Fig. 88). The baculum is small with a narrow shaft, a rounded base and a simple tip. The shaft is characteristically strongly bowed. It is also distinguished from H. cineraceus by its longer forearm (37.0 mm; 36.0-37.5 mm) and "shorter ears". According to Khajuria, 1970, the tail projects further beyond the interfemoral membrane (2.5-4.0 mm) than that of H. cineraceus (1 mm). The tibiae are long. The pelage colour is variable. It ranges from brown to reddish brown on the dorsal surface. The ventral surface is whitish but with brown tips to the hairs present on the chest, throat, shoulders and flanks. In general, the shoulders and muzzle are darker. Subadults generally have a brownish patch on the throat and chest.
Cranial and dental characters
The skull has an average condylo-basal length of 13.1 mm (13.0-13.9). This is comparable to that of H. cineraceus .
Variation
All specimens are referred to the nominate form H. d. durgadasi .
