Identification

Several identification keys have been added. Where possible, these keys have been supported by drawings and colour photographs. We have tried to keep the descriptive text as simple as possible but this is not always practicable, especially in the description of cranial and dental characters. Consequently, we have included an illustrated glossary to help explain some of the more frequently used terms.

- Picture Key, this is an illustrated key that leads to generic level.

- Text Key, this is a dichotomous key leading to species level. Names of families or genera in the Contents from the menubar can also being used as starting points for this key.
A genus name between brackets is a notification that at that point the key goes to the species description. The genus in that case has only one species found in the area studied.
The buttons Previous and Decision path can be used to find out the choices that have been made at any point in the key.

- IdentifyIt has data files with character matrices of all genera and species of bats occurring in the area. You can identify a specimen by entering a "search pattern" that describes the bat as a series of character states. IdentifyIt then compares the search pattern to the bat species in the current file and tells you the percentage match for each, so that you can find out which bat is the closest match to your specimen.

It is hoped that this will favour the non-specialist by presenting a range of characters by which individual bats may be identified.
